Hi!ย I wanted to show you 5 odd items that I need to writeย ๐
1. This Hourglass
I keep this hourglass on my desk.ย I’ve always loved them, since I was young.
Because I don’t really have a concept of time, I need this little guy to keep track of time for me.
It’s 30 minutes long, so two flips gives me a good chunk of uninterrupted writing time.
My goal is to sit and do at least 30 minutes of writing daily.ย Writing daily can be tough with school, but 30 minutes is an achievable goal.
And once I start, I usually do 60ย ๐
2. Sharpie Pens & Cheap Notebooks
There’s nothing wrong with typing, except on the times when I don’t want to censor myself.
Sometimes what I need to come out of a writer’s block or to tease out a scene is to write non-stop.
While I can type pretty dang fast, I can also hit that backspace key pretty dang fast, too.
To avoid deleting any hidden gems or going too slow because I’m censoring myself, I simply grab one of these super-glidy Sharpies and go to town on a cheap notebook!ย โ๏ธ
3. Lots and Lots of USBs
I like to save my drafts as I go, and not on top of each other.
With any given story I will have Title Rough Draft 1, Title Rough Draft 2, Title Rough Draft 3… and on it goes.
I just love to explore stories by going off on tangents, writing too many scenes, or simply word-vomiting onto the Word document.
This way, if I go down a path I don’t particularly like, I can revert to an older draft.ย Simple!ย ๐
4. This Piece of Paper With Senses on It…
Is writing setting your strongest skill?ย Then I am jealous of you.
As a new writer, I struggle with how much to share about any given setting.
This little piece of paper always reminds me that setting doesn’t have to be boring.ย It doesn’t have to be “this is what the place looks like.”
It reminds me to add dimension~ colors, sounds, smells, sensations… It’s really a great little tool for bringing setting to lifeย ๐บ
5. My Headphones, Even Though I Don’t Listen to Music
This one is a must when out in public.
It’s a bit of a lie, really, but a harmless oneย ๐ย When you want to be left alone, there’s nothing that signals DO NOT DISTURB the way that headphones do.
People are more likely to leave you alone so that you can write.
And hey, you can always put on the music or just enjoy the way the headphones lower the noise around youย ๐ง
Got anything weird you need to write?
Let me know in the commentsย ๐
Take care,

It’s so neat how little things can alter how we write! I need sunlight – and this one might be a little weird, but I need a keyboard that makes a click-clack sound when I type. I like that sound. It’s the sound of accomplishment lol

Sunlight! Yeah, it seems harder to write on cloudy days… And lol I love that sound ๐

Time has been scarce in my universe these past two weeks so if anything, I really need time to myself…when kids aren’t running around me, spilling things. ๐ What a cute post! Love the GIFs esp the USB one. Made me smile.

I bet it’s hard to find solo time with kiddos! But even a little bit does the trick ๐ Haha yeah USB cat is cranking out that novel ๐

Glad to know I am not the only one with weird habits. I need music when I write. Usually 80s hair bands or movie scores. My desk also has to be a certain way. I have to be able to see my Doctor Who calendar. It is a reminder to keep going.

Omg this is Great! I love your hourglass what a cute quirky item. Nice to know I’m not the only one who has loads of USBs, I never thought of saving separate versions.
I have a mass of coloured pens for when I want to do my notes as I love using coloured felt pens.
Oooh I love your senses sheet. I always remember the five senses but I never think of things like temperature etc. I may have to steal that idea.

Colors! I sense a theme here ๐
And steal away! ๐ It is super helpful for triggering ideas and adding dimension to setting. Thanks so much for reading โ

I have these old photographs from my mother’s side of the family that I have no idea what their names are but I have wanted to write a short story on each one of them. Above my desk I have to cork boards that house these photos, pictures of castles, a feather, and of a kimono dragon that I would love to write a story about also. I love using objects to inspire my imagination and develop worlds, stories, and characters around them.

I hope you do write the stories, because that sounds so cool! I bet some really interesting stories could be inspired by those items. Thanks so much for sharing โ

I love the headphone idea, I use them in the holidays when the kids are home. I think the hourglass is a great idea.
