Free Indie Author Resources (Updated 2020)

Hello, Indie and Independent Authors! πŸ™‚ Today, I have an updated list of *free* resources that I use for my writing and publishing.

These are online resources, easy for us to reach. They are free, but most have the option of unlocking more goodies with a monthly or yearly payment. Let’s dive in!

1. Make professional social media posts or promotional material with:

Have you ever made the perfect image for social media, only to find that it doesn’t fit on Instagram, or it’s not the right dimensions for Twitter, or that when you upload the image it looks wonky? QuotesCover has you… covered. (*ba dum tss!)

You choose what you want to make.

You can do A LOT for free, with the option of unlocking more with a membership of $2.90 per month (as of today).

2. Make/Edit your book covers online with:

Pixlr has updated since I last suggested it, so here is the new version! You can do a lot more with this newer version. It even has an option to search through stock images, without leaving the website!

3. Make your writing time cool and distraction-free with:

I love this typewriter because you can choose the typewriter sounds you want (such as classic or computer keyboard). There is something so satisfying about hearing those clicks! 🀀

You can also set writing goals per page or per session, set a word or character count goal, or a timer. All very useful.

4. Make your cover/social media posts POP with free images from:

I know I’ve shared this one before, because it is so helpful, but here it is again for my new readers! Pixabay has a wide variety of free stock images you can use for your book covers, promotional materials, or social media posts.

5. Make your book public with a published ebook or paperback with:

With KDP, you have the option to publish your book via Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and paperback. You will have to learn to navigate the website, like any other site, but once you get the hang of it, it is super easy and convenient!

  1. Thank you for this helpful information, I have used Canva.com. Some of it is free but after the first time of intense usage it pretty much locks up. You can sign up to use it free for the first 30 days after that it is $12.95 a month or $9.95 a month with a yearly subscription.
